About the university

The Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin) is a young, international university with a unique history. It is one of the five highest-performing universities in Germany and, in 2007, became one of the few universities recognised as a University of Excellence by the German federal and state government Excellence Initiative. The initiative of students and international support were decisive factors in the foundation of the FU Berlin at the beginning of the cold war, in 1948. Since then, international stimuli have shaped research and student life.

With around 33,500 students and 4,000 doctoral candidates, the FU Berlin is one of the largest universities in Germany. More than 450 professors work at the university. The FU Berlin offers more than 170 degree programmes in a wide range of subjects at twelve departments and four central institutes. Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is the joint medical faculty of the FU Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. With the structured doctoral programmes of the Dahlem Research School, the FU Berlin offers junior academics ideal conditions for development.

There are almost 4,600 employees at the FU Berlin, around half of whom are academic staff and around 100 of whom are apprentices. The university trains apprentices for twelve professions in areas including administration, media and information services, animal care, gardening, event management and laboratory roles.

Job satisfaction and employee well-being are a central concern of the FU Berlin. Therefore, high value is placed on equal opportunity, personnel development, continuing education, the promotion of health and work-life balance. Employees have a wide variety of options available to them in these areas. These include tailored training courses, a variety of sports courses, an emergency childcare service for children of employees and students, and measures to promote health - including some within the workplace.

Stellenticket Freie Universität Berlin is run in collaboration with the Career Service of the FU Berlin. The Career Service connects employers with students at an early stage and assists with questions regarding internships, career planning and entering the job market in Germany or abroad.
