About the university
Thanks to Wilhelm von Humboldt's forward-looking concept, the Berlin university has been a role model for modern universities since its founding in 1810: the unification of teaching and research, freedom of science and all-round education of students have become guiding principles for numerous universities around the world.
The teaching and research profile of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) encompasses all fundamental academic disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, cultural studies, human medicine, agricultural sciences, mathematics and natural sciences. The university has 9 faculties and 171 study programmes. In the course of its development, it has produced 29 Nobel Prize winners, including Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Robert Koch and Fritz Haber. Famous personalities such as Otto von Bismarck, Heinrich Heine and Karl Marx were enrolled as students here. Even today, the HU Berlin regularly takes the top spot in national and international university rankings.
This tradition is carried forward with the university's success in the 2019 Excellence Initiative. The Berlin University Alliance, which includes the four strong academic partners HU Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, won funding in the competition "Excellence Strategy of the German Federal and State Governments".
The HU Berlin cultivates academic partnerships with more than 500 universities. Traditionally, it maintains intensive relations with Northern, Central and Eastern Europe and strong collaborations with the USA, Asia, Cuba and Southern Africa. For years, the university has run the largest programme under the German Academic Exchange Service's Eastern Partnerships funding. Student mobility is an important concern for the university; more than 800 students complete part of their studies abroad each year, and around 1,200 international students spend periods at the HU Berlin. Around 800 researchers from all over the world visit Berlin's oldest university every year.
The HU Berlin offers its students an excellent education at a location steeped in tradition. In addition to offering academic courses of study, it places emphasis on the employability of its graduates.
Stellenticket Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is run in collaboration with the Career Center of the HU Berlin. The Career Center plays a decisive role in imparting practical knowledge and key skills to members of the university. It provides intensive support to students and graduates of all disciplines, offering training and advice on career orientation during their studies and on entering professional life after graduation. At the same time, the employees of the HU Berlin Career Center assist companies and institutions looking for qualified employees.
